A Non-Governmental Organisation,
Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action, on Thursday in Kano started
the training of 30 female victims of human trafficking in various
trades.
The training is being conducted in
collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of
Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters, Kano Zonal Command.
Deputy Director of PRAWA, Mr. Yinka
Lawal, stated during the opening ceremony that the decision to embark on
the training of the victims was informed by the agency’s determination
to make them self-reliant.
Despite
the efforts of NAPTIP to curb this menace, Lawal disclosed that human
trafficking had remained a serious social menace in the country.
“This brought to the fore the need to
make coordinated effort to end the problem of human trafficking, since
this seems to be one of the causes of illegal migration,” he said.
Also, he said that similar training
would be held in Anambra, Edo, Kaduna and Ogun after which the trainees
would be provided with start-up capital.
According to Lawal, the organisation
would continue to partner with NAPTIP, with a view to sensitising
vulnerable women and youths, as well as community leaders on dangers of
illegal migration and misconceptions about greener pastures in Europe,
America and other countries.
